Frosty the Snowman airs tonight at 8 p.m. on CBS and that calls for a second Christmas Song of the Day for today.
It’s also fitting considering the awesome snow we have here in Cincinnati today.
Frosty the Snowman is a very popular Christmas song that really isn’t all that old. It was written by Walter “Jack” Rollins and Steve Nelson, and Gene Autry and the Cass County Boys in recorded the song first in 1950. That’s not a bad follow-up to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer for Autry.
With apologies to Autry, Jimmy Durante’s version of the song is the one I like best because of the classic television special. Frosty first aired on Dec. 7, 1969, on CBS. It’s not quite A Charlie Brown Christmas or Rudolph, but it’s a solid No. 3.
The show was produced by the Christmas special heavyweight duo Rankin/Bass. Durante was narrator and Jackie Vernon was the voice for Frosty.
